Fibromyalgia- How can Ayurveda help with Fibromyalgia?

Ayurvedic remedies can be useful for treating fibromyalgiaThe Ayurveda Retreat program for fibromyalgia is conducted under the supervision of our Ayurvedic Consultant and draws on knowledge from Ayurveda, the world's oldest and most complete system of natural health.

Through its unique assessment of causal imbalances at the basis of the condition, and its wide range of time-tested recommendations, Ayurveda provides the most comprehensive approach to fibromyalgia available in natural health care today.

Understanding the Root Causes of Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition associated with the experience of non-inflammatory pain and tenderness in muscles, ligaments and joints. It is created by a variety of physical, mental and social influences and therefore responds well to the multi-modality approach of Ayurveda.

To truly address the causes of fibromyalgia, it is necessary to remove the following types of root imbalances.

a) Nervous system imbalance

According to Ayurveda, the physiological principle at the basis of nervous system stability and activation is called Vata. Fibromyalgia is perceived as a classic Vata imbalance.

Vata is the most easily disturbed physiological principle in the body.  Ayurveda provides a wide variety of time-tested dietary, herbal and lifestyle recommendations to help balance Vata and remove the symptoms caused by its aggravation.

b) Build-up of toxins and impurities

Many disorders can occur when toxins build up in tissues. One of the first influences toxin accumulation has is on the nerve tissue. If toxins continually aggravate the nerve tissue the result can be symptoms of tenderness, pain and hypersensitivity to stimulation.

Toxins can also block the channels of circulation to affected areas, thus diminishing the natural cleansing processes of the body and allowing more impurities to accumulate in the tissues.

Ayurveda addresses the need to cleanse the body and open the channels of circulation by providing the most thorough internal cleansing programs.

c) Accumulation of stress

Various stressors like infection, allergy and mental stress are well known to trigger fibromyalgia symptoms. Enhancing the body's ability to recover from stress is an integral part of Ayurveda Retreat's approach to health and well-being.

A Natural Treatment Approach to Fibromyalgia

The following section describes the approaches used at Ayurveda Retreat to remove the root causes of fibromyalgia by reducing Vata imbalance, eliminating toxin build-up and reversing the effects of chronic stress.

a) Cleansing therapies:  Rejuvenation Therapy

Our Ayurvedic Consultant may advise you to embark on a thorough cleansing program (Panchkarma) which may span a period of 7-14 days requiring daily visits. This may entail a daily three-hour treatment program of massage, heat treatment and mild internal cleansing. These three treatments received in combination create the ideal internal physical environment for healing.

b) Herbalised Oil Massage

Daily herbalised oil massage provides a deeply soothing and balancing effect to the entire nervous system. The motion of massage creates heat and friction which enhance circulation and help cleanse the areas of chemical impurities that could be aggravating and hyper-sensitising nerve tissues.
The various herbs that have been boiled into a base oil, and the oil itself, are specifically chosen for their Vata balancing influence. The oil allows the herbs to deeply penetrate the tissue beds, thereby balancing the nerve tissues in the affected areas. Our Ayurvedic Consultant will choose a specific herbalised oil that is individually prepared for your condition.

c) Diet, Nutrition and Digestion

Fibromyalgia can be created and aggravated through improper diet. Some foods make Vata highly active, thereby increasing excessive sensitivity to pain and aggravating fibromyalgia symptoms.
Our Ayurvedic Consultant will help you understand which foods are the most clogging and obstructing to circulation and which are the hardest to digest. These foods have the potential to create toxins (undigested food not only clogs the channels in the body but actually becomes toxic).
Foods that can easily be digested, creating micronutrients that are then assimilated into the tissues to rebuild tissue strength, will be recommended. Our Ayurvedic Consultant will also provide programs to improve digestion, an important prerequisite for overcoming fibromyalgia.
Ayurveda Retreat cooking classes provide knowledge of how to prepare foods in ways that create maximum nourishment for the body while simultaneously preventing incomplete digestion and clogged circulation.

In summary, improper nutrition can create and aggravate fibromyalgia, but proper nutrition can go a long way to curing and preventing it.

d) Stress Management and Improved Mental and Emotional Function

It is well documented that fibromyalgia is often worsened by heightened stress, anxiety and mental fatigue. There are hormonal changes and other biochemical responses to stress that can aggravate the nervous system and the immune response. The sleep disturbance that is often created by fibromyalgia increases fatigue, which in turn increases one's susceptibility to stress, which in turn aggravates the fibromyalgia condition.

You have the option of learning how to meditate. Meditation has a wealth of scientific research verifying its effect on reducing many of the mental and stress factors influencing fibromyalgia. Research shows it creates virtually the opposite physiological response that stress does and helps the body recover more quickly from stressful stimuli. There are published articles on the effectiveness of meditation for both pain relief and insomnia.

e) Lifestyle and Daily Routine

One of the most important factors for balancing Vata and maintaining stability in the nervous system is to have a lifestyle that does not disturb natural bodily rhythms. When we eat, sleep and exercise in constantly fluctuating and disturbing patterns, the body loses its natural balancing cycles and cannot cleanse or heal itself as effectively. Therefore, regularity in our daily routine can be extremely effective in reducing Vata imbalances, and therefore, the effects of Fibromyalgia.

Improper lifestyle can create the Vata imbalance at the basis of fibromyalgia and disrupts the body's ability to remove toxins and impurities. Our Ayurvedic Consultant will review your daily routine and provide the information you need to help create a daily schedule that will actually increase balance your nervous system and aid in the healing your body.

f) Ayurvedic Herbs and Reduction in Free Radicals

During your consultation, our Ayurvedic Consultant will select the appropriate herbal formulas for strengthening digestion, balancing the nervous system and purifying the body of toxins, including free radicals.

Free radicals are highly irritating to the physiology and their presence creates and worsens many disorders, including fibromyalgia. When appropriate our Ayurvedic Consultant will recommend herbs that contain powerful anti-oxidants and free radical scavengers. These herbs can also have a holistic influence of balancing and nourishing the entire physiology.

g) Exercise and Flexibility Education

Stretching exercise is known to have a positive effect on fibromyalgia. We offer Yoga classes to give you a simple but profound set of postures that can be practiced daily to create a healthy flexibility throughout the body. We also instruct you in individualised Yoga breathing practices that create a state of restful alertness in mind and body.
