Reduction
Therapies in practice

Ayurvedic palliation therapy is largely used for reducing Ama, or undigested food massThere are many different forms of detoxification, purification or reduction therapies. Any therapy which aims at eliminating or reducing something, whether it is promoting sweating, urination or excretion, or reducing fever or weight falls into this category.

Reduction therapy in Ayurveda has two parts: palliation (Shamana) and purification (Shodhana). Palliation means calming or pacifying. It is largely for reducing Ama, the undigested food mass, and calming the doshas so that they can be dispelled from the body through purification therapy. The dosha may be mixed with toxic accumulations, which irritate it and make its symptoms more complex.

This mass must first be separated from the dosha to enable us to work on it directly.

Palliation therapy

There are seven parts to this:
  • Herbal supplements for burning up toxins and stimulating digestion
  • Fasting from food and water
  • Exercise
  • Sunbathing
  • Exposure to wind

These methods strengthen the digestive fire, (Agni) and destroy toxins. They cleanse the digestive tract and allow the toxins in the deeper tissues to drain into it so they can be eliminated.

Purification therapy (Panchakarma)

Vomiting is one of the methods used in Ayurvedic detoxPurification is a special therapy to eliminate illness-causing doshas. The power and efficacy of Ayurvedic purification therapy comes through its system for guiding the toxins to their sites for elimination. Merely to flush out various organs is not effective if the toxins are not located at these sites.

If the aggravated doshas are mixed with the tissues, waste materials of the body or with Ama, the undigested food mass, they cannot be directly eliminated. Palliation methods must first be applied instead.

Purification therapy consists of five parts known as Panchakarma, the five cleansing actions. They are the most radical way to cleanse the body and eliminate once and for all the illness-causing doshas. They are:
  • Therapeutic vomiting (Vamana)
  • Therapeutic purgation (Virechana)
  • Medicated enemas (Basti)
  • Nasal medications (Nasya)
  • Therapeutic release of toxic blood (Rakta Moksha)
The patient should have some strength to undergo Panchakarma because these methods can be strongly reducing. It is a clinical practice with should be carried out under supervision from a qualified Ayurvedic Consultant and requires proper equipment and facilities. Its methods are varied according to the individual, illness, season, culture etc.
